Crestron’s 3-series processors have been on the market for a few months now. We thought it was time we took a quick look under the bonnet. We will attempt to answer the age old question:
Should I upgrade?

Toolbox System Info
The real advantage of the MC3 is in the program management. It can load up to 10 simultaneous programs as opposed to one for the AV2. Here’s the system info window shown in Crestron Toolbox (click image for a larger version):
As you can see, there are two programs in there, and you can load up to 10.
Debugging
Using the Simpl debugger you can still debug your programs individually. When you select the IP address of the MC3 or USB to connect to the processor, a popup will ask you which program you want to debug. Then everything loads up just like normal.
Uploading Programs
Be careful with your debugging windows while uploading. We noticed a consistent problem in loading new code (abort modem-x) to the MC3 when 2 or more debugging windows are open. This was all via USB so we’re unsure if the same problem persists via tcp. It’s difficult to define where the problem lies, sometimes no debugging window is open and the error appears. We would have to open a new debugging window and then close it and seems to let you fully upload the program like that.
Controlling Multiple Programs
You cannot control multiple programs with the same IPID. You will have to use EISC (Ethernet Inter-System Communications) to talk between programs as you did before with multiple processors. The only difference with the EISC method before and now is that the IP address used is 127.0.0.2 to refer back to itself.
At the End of the Day
If your system is running fine on a 2-series processor then it may well not be worth upgrading to the 3-series, however if you are intending to run multiple 2-series processors in a single location then one MC3 will certainly make financial sense.
C3 have been awarded the title of ‘Most Creative GUI’ at Crestron’s 2011 Integration Awards for their programming and interface design at a large private residence. The award presentation took place at Crestron’s after-show party at the CEDIA Home Technology Event at the Excel centre in London’s Docklands.
The award was given for a custom interface based around C3′s own Brushed Steel template which utilised floor plans of the residence to make control of the entire house’s services as simple as possible. Controlled services included AV, Lighting, HVAC, Security, CCTV and Access Control. The judges commented “The winning company C3 Custom Code Crafters has provided a wealth of information on a variety of GUI’s, yet always in a clear and concise manner”.
